We have an ever increasing amount of audio material being presented to the center speaker by the movie and music directors that we receive in our programming today.  I needed a center speaker to handle the newer loads; one that can integrate well (timbre match) and keep up with my mains.

After 6 years of enjoying my last center speaker, I've found the need to design and build an even larger and more capable speaker.  I have two Lambda TD12S series wired 4 ohm drivers, a single Davis Kevlar midrange, and the Hi Vi research planer ribbon tweeter.  My mains and center speaker have a better timbre match with the Lambdas and Hi Vi RT2II tweet.

Being constrained by the size I'm allowed to build with the placement under the TV, I built it 16h" x 17d" x 34.5w" and it weighs in 130 lbs.  The Lambda midwoofers are 23.5 lbs each and I've used 3/4" mdf for the construction material.

My -3 dB point is at 59 hz.  I use the standard THX settings cutting off my low end at 80 hz.  The Davis Kevlar midrange has its own sealed enclosure.  My crossover points are at 500 hz & 2800 hz.  I have used the Audience Auric #18 gauge interconnect wiring for this speaker.  The impedance hump of the Lambdas that is shown in the graph is at 30hz which is the fs of the driver and is far away from my xover point of 500 hz, so it is not noticed.  The hump for the midrange is out of the xover cutoff point so it too, it is negligible.  I designed a tweeter eq in the crossover so my -0- plot line is very good.

The dampening material  is a small amount of Sonic Barrier on top of the midrange driver interior box and a small amount of polyfill was added between the drivers, also above the midrange enclosure. The final finish is black slate Pionite laminate to match the rest of my front speakers and subwoofer.  This speaker has added so much more soundstage and presence to my overall system.  It is truly an awesome loudspeaker!  I never realized that by adding this new and much larger center speaker that I would gain so much more musical and theater quality to my system.  The difference is unimaginable!

I have posted a clickable link button below for my crossover design and graphs for you to use.
